Went to be with the Lord on October 10, 2024 at Vassar Comfort Care; age 89 years. Dori was born on November 8, 1934 in Saginaw to the late Walter and Beatrice Fanger. She was married to Alois (Chip) Schmitzer Jr. on August 1, 1953 at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, Saginaw; he predeceased her on February 7, 2006.
She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church- Frankenmuth where she served in many capacities: Sunday School Teacher, Choir, Handbells, Ladies Aid, Altar Guild, Lutheran Women's Mission Society, helped with VBS, and funeral kitchen help.
She loved spending time with family and friends, crafting, reading, and winters in Florida.
Dori was employed by: Sunshine Biscuit, Bavarian Inn, and part time-in home childcare.
Surviving are four children and their spouses: Alois III (Brownie) and Ruth Schmitzer, Greenville, MI, Matt Schmitzer and Lori Reinbold Nugent, Hemlock, MI, Monica and Dan Schultz, West Bend, WI, Mary and Michael Bourdow, Frankenmuth, MI. 13 grandchildren Grant Schmitzer, Silas Schmitzer, Faith Naumann, Jordan Schmitzer, Preston Schmitzer, Lana Sprain, Josh Holland, Sarah Beam, Dan Schultz, Rebekah Schultz, Anthony Bourdow, Nathan Bourdow, Monica Daniel; and 26 great grandchildren. In-law's: Floyd Schmitzer, Melna Bergman, and Shirley Poellet, and many nieces and nephews.
Besides her husband Alois Jr. (Chip), Dori was preceded in death by her siblings and their spouses: Geraldine and Robert Hoernlein, Donald and Betty Fanger, Lorraine and Sonny Weiss, Wilma Fanger, Betty Fanger. In-laws/spouses Kurt and Donna Schmitzer, Delphine and Jerry Blohm, William Bergman, Joanne Schmitzer, and nephew Terry Fanger.
The family would like to give sincere thanks to Vassar Comfort Care staff for the compassionate care and love they provided during her stay there.
Funeral service will take place Tuesday, October 15, 2024, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1200 E. Genesee, Frankenmuth, Michigan. Rev. Patrick Ernst will officiate with burial in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Dori's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Monday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church (Missionary Fund), Vassar Comfort Care, or Visiting Angels of Frankenmuth.
