Went home to be with the Lord following a brief illness on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at age 92, surrounded by his loving family. Floyd was born on April 17, 1932, in Frankenmuth, MI to the late Alois and Gretchen (Rupprecht) Schmitzer. He was married to Joan Jones on September 25, 1952; she predeceased him on November 19, 2009. Floyd later married Dorothy H. Jorgensen on November 26, 2016; she survives him.
Following graduation from Arthur Hill High School, Floyd honorably served in the U.S Army, including an assignment on Enewetak Atoll in the Pacific Ocean. He owned and operated Schmitzer & Sons Plumbing until his retirement and was well known and highly respected in the Frankenmuth and surrounding community. Floyd became an Eagle Scout and later served as an adult leader of Troop 255 in Frankenmuth. He was Scoutmaster for several years. Two of his sons also attained the rank of Eagle Scout. Floyd was a lifelong resident of Frankenmuth and member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
Surviving besides his second wife Dorothy are: 5 sons and 1 daughter, Floyd Alan (Lynn) Schmitzer, Allen (Renee) Schmitzer, Joel (Rose) Schmitzer, Brian (Marlene) Schmitzer, Duane Schmitzer and Linda Schmitzer; 4 step-children, Robert (Anne) Jorgensen, John (AnaMari) Jorgensen, Janine (Dana) Livingston, and Lynda (Mike) Licastro; 8 grandchildren, Erin (Dan) Paulson, Nick, David (Heather), Michael (Rachel), Corey (Abby), Kyle, Brandon (fiancé Jennifer) and Amanda (Michael); 8 step-grandchildren, Emily (Jeff), Adam (Shannon), Ian, Jenna, Kelly, Sophia, Eric and Nina; 14 great-grandchildren; 4 step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Melna and Shirley; and many nieces and nephews.
Besides his first wife Joan, Floyd was preceded in death by brothers Alois "Chip" and Kurt, sister Delphine, and daughter-in-law Tammy.
For his entire life, Floyd brought joy and happiness to his family and his many friends. He will be missed dearly and will remain in our hearts forever.
Funeral service will take place Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 1200 E. Genesee, Frankenmuth, Michigan. Rev. Patrick Ernst will officiate with burial in St. John's Lutheran Cemetery. Floyd's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Friday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. John's Lutheran Church or American Cancer Society.
