Frances Lydia Bernthal, "Mutz", was called to her heavenly home on July 4, 2021, just 3 days before her 90 th birthday.  She was born on July 7, 1931, to the late Erwin and Lydia (Bierlein) Bickel in Frankenmuth, MI.  Frances married Herbert Bernthal on Nov. 3, 1951; he survives her.  Frances was secretary/treasurer of Bernthal Packing for many years, an active member of St. Lorenz church, a charter member of the Frankenmuth Women's Club, and an avid U of M fan.  She loved baking and supporting her family, church, and community.

Surviving besides her husband are two sons and two daughters; Phil (Dawn) Bernthal, Paul (Marie) Bernthal, Barb (Jerry) Zietz, Beth (Jim) Reindel; grandchildren Dru (Adam) Montri, Gwen (Scott) Victorson, Nathan (Karly) Bernthal, Jacob (Brooke) Bernthal, Andrea (Corey) Phillips, Katie (Paul) Trinquero, Nick (Aom) Bernthal, Adam (Kelsey) Bernthal, Andrew (Amy) Zietz and Rebecca Zietz; great grandchildren Lydia and Alison Montri, Delilah and Elias Victorson, Hunter, Isabelle, EJ, Henry, Ekoe, August, Nason, and Blakely Bernthal, Eason, Ava and Audrey Phillips, Noah and Madison Trinquero, Avery, Adalyn, and Haylee Zietz and Austin Pike, one sister Shirley (Fred) Bernthal and one brother Ken (Jan) Bickel.

In addition to her parents, Frances was predeceased by an infant son and her foster brother Ed Nuechterlein.

Funeral services will take place on Saturday, July 10th, 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, 1030 W. Tuscola, Frankenmuth, Michigan.  The service will also be livestreamed at stlorenz.org/stream.  Pastor Hubbard will officiate with burial following in St. Lorenz Cemetery. Frances' family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Friday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Lorenz School or a charity of donor's choosing.
