HARVEY E. KERN, age 93,

Frankenmuth, MI

Harvey E. Kern, having lived 93 amazing years, passed away peacefully and called to his heavenly home on Saturday, March 8, 2025.

Harvey was born on July 31, 1931 in Frankenmuth, MI to the late Ernest L. Kern and Eleanor A. Conzelmann. He married Norine Koeppendoerfer, who opted for a shorter name, on August 30, 1952. She predeceased him in 2002.

Harvey was a lifetime member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church which he served as Treasurer along with various Parish Study Committees.

Upon graduating from Michigan State University, he served as 1st Lieutenant in the US Air Force; thereafter he joined the CPA firm of Yeo & Yeo.

Harvey started with Frankenmuth Mutual Insurance as Accountant in 1960 and spanned a career of 41 years during which time he held the positions of Controller, Vice President, Treasurer, Executive Vice President, Chief Executive Officer, and Chairman.

For his commitment to the insurance industry as evidenced by his service and leadership roles with the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies, the Insurance Information Association of Michigan, the Michigan Insurance Federation, the Insurance Accounting and Statistical Association, and the Michigan Chamber of Commerce; he was inducted into The Michigan Insurance Hall of Fame in 1996.

Harvey's community service included United Way of Saginaw, the Frankenmuth Area United Way, Junior Achievement, Frankenmuth Area Community Foundation, St. Luke's Hospital, Frankenmuth Chamber of Commerce, Frankenmuth Economic Development Corporation, the Heritage Park Commission, and the City of Frankenmuth, serving as City Assessor for eleven years. In 2013 the Frankenmuth Jaycees awarded Harvey with the Herbert L. Keinath Distinguished Service Award.

Harvey was a member of Frankenmuth Noon Rotary Club, served as Treasurer, Board Member and President; Frankenmuth Conservation Club; Frankenmuth American Legion Post 150.

He was a supporter of Trout Unlimited, Au Sable North Branch Foundation, Huron Pines, along with a host of other organizations over the years too numerous to list.

Surviving him are Daughters, Naomi Kern, The Woodlands, Texas; Heidi (Jeff Sonenshein) Kern, Holly, Michigan; and Mara (Scott) Hetzner, Frankenmuth; Brother Ernie (Christine), West Columbia, Texas; and sister-in-law Sandra Kern. Predeceased by brothers William and Eugene.

Funeral Service will take place on Friday, March 14, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, 1030 W. Tuscola, Frankenmuth, Michigan. The service will be livestreamed at https://www.stlorenz.org/stream/ . Burial to follow at St. Lorenz Cemetery. Harvey's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Those wishing to honor Harvey's memory may consider memorials to St. Lorenz Foundation Vicar Fund or the Frankenmuth City Beautification Committee Foundation.
