Herbert Edwin Bernthal, having lived 90 remarkable years, met his beautiful Savior and his wife Frances, the love of his life, in his heavenly home on July 24, 2021. He was born on March 31,1931 to Richard and Agnes (Nuechterlein) Bernthal in Frankenmuth. He was the youngest of 6 children and lived in the George Bernthal homestead. Herb married Frances Bickel on Nov. 3, 1951 and would have celebrated 70 years of marriage this year. He was founder and President of Bernthal Packing, loved life and was always willing to get involved and give back.
Herb graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1949 and then served his country at Ft. Bragg, NC as a member of the 82nd Airborne. At St. Lorenz he served on numerous committees and was congregation President, on the Foundation Board, an Elder, Lutheran Laymen's League President, and on the Board of Directors for Lutheran Homes. Herb was also the first President of the Frankenmuth Athletic Association, President of the Frankenmuth Chamber, Vice President of the Conservation Club, President of Rotary, Township Treasurer, on the Board of Directors for Independence Village, was a Paul Harris Fellow, an American Legion member, President of the Michigan Meat Association, and a Director of the American Association of Meat Producers. He loved watching his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren participate in sports, traveling the world with his beloved wife, hunting and fishing with his family and friends and was an avid MSU fan. He loved his family, church, sports, community, and country.
Surviving are two sons and two daughters; Phil (Dawn) Bernthal, Paul (Marie) Bernthal, Barb (Jerry) Zietz, Beth (Jim) Reindel; grandchildren Dru (Adam) Montri, Gwen (Scott) Victorson, Nathan (Karly) Bernthal, Jacob (Brooke) Bernthal, Andrea (Corey) Phillips, Katie (Paul) Trinquero, Nick (Aom) Bernthal, Adam (Kelsey) Bernthal, Andrew (Amy) Zietz and Rebecca Zietz; great grandchildren Lydia and Alison Montri, Delilah and Elias Victorson, Hunter, Isabelle, EJ, Henry, Ekoe, August, Nason, and Blakely Bernthal, Eason, Ava and Audrey Phillips, Noah and Madison Trinquero, Avery, Adalyn, and Haylee Zietz and Austin Pike, and one brother Frederick (Shirley) Bernthal.
In addition to his parents, Herb was predeceased by his wife Frances, an infant son, his brothers Arnold (Doris), Wilmar (Lorna), and Edward (Berniece) Bernthal, and sister Lucy (Fred) Conzelmann.
Funeral services will take place on Wednesday, July 28 th , 2021, at 11 a.m. at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, 1030 W. Tuscola, Frankenmuth, Michigan. The service will also be livestreamed at stlorenz.org/stream. Rev. Shawn Fenske will officiate with burial following in St. Lorenz Cemetery. Herb's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the Church on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to the St. Lorenz Foundation, the Lutheran Hour Ministries, or the Frankenmuth Athletic Association.
