Passed away peacefully with family by his side Saturday, June 6, 2026 at his home at the age of 80. John was born on June 28, 1945 in Raven, VA to the late Virgil and Lona Blankenship. He was married to Lucy Shipp on September 2, 1967 and were married for 59 years.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lucy; his brother, Joe (Monica) Blankenship of Owosso, Michigan; his daughters, Shanon (Kevin) Wolfram of Frankenmuth, Michigan, and Niki (T.J.) Millard of Kalamazoo, Michigan; and his son, David (Amanda) Blankenship of Guntersville, Alabama. He also leaves behind his grandchildren, Kurtis and Kyle Wolfram, and Meadow and Seth Millard; his step-grandchildren, Mikaila and Connor Smith and Amelie Shepard; as well as many beloved nieces and nephews.
John graduated from Corunna High School and later Ferris State University. He was a dedicated high school teacher and coach of various sports at Houghton Lake, Calumet, Millington and Frankenmuth. He also coached football at Kalamazoo Hackett High School, and Northwood University. On the field he taught athletes about teamwork, discipline, resilience and sportsmanship. Over the years he has had a profound impact on many student athletes across various sports.
John was an avid golfer who found great joy not only in playing the game but also in sharing his passion with his entire family, teaching each of them the skills and traditions of golf while creating lasting memories together.
Memorial Service will take place on Saturday, June 13, 2026 at 1:00 p.m. at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. Frankenmuth, MI. Cremation has taken place. John’s family will receive visitors at the funeral home on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those wishing to honor his memory may consider making a memorial contribution to the athletic departments of Frankenmuth High School or Houghton Lake High School.
