Lucille went to be home with her Savior on Christmas morning. She was 98 years old. Lucille was born to Sigmund and Clara (Ortner) Bierlein in Saginaw, Michigan on August 14, 1926 and married Donald Bernthal on September 29, 1946. She lived in Bad Axe, Michigan for many years and was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday School, served on the altar committee, and was a member of LWML. Her husband predeceased her on May 19, 1983. In 1985 she returned to Frankenmuth and was a member of St. Lorenz Lutheran Church where she sang in the Mixed Choir for many years. She married Werner Laarz on March 27, 1996. He predeceased her on July 13, 2012. In 2018 she moved to Oviedo, Florida and lived at Lutheran Haven in Independent and then Assisted Living. She loved to travel, read, cross stitch and listen to music (especially German music!).
Surviving are two children, Craig (Gail) Bernthal, Cathy (Gil) Tardif, four grandchildren, Kristina (Rob) Banks, Timothy (Teresa) Tardif, Sarah (Chris) Bernthal Zeitz, and Luke (Hannah) Bernthal, eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Predeceased are her sister Cynthia (Wallace) Riethmeier, sister-in-law Gladys (Paul) Christmann, brother-in-law Norbert (Ruth Kueffner) Bernthal, and sister-in-law Marilyn (Clayton) Dey.
Funeral Service will take place on Friday, January 3, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Lorenz Lutheran Church, 1030 W. Tuscola, Frankenmuth, Michigan. Lucille's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Lorenz Media Ministry or St. Lorenz Youth Ministry.
