Obituary

Maureen Anne Caliman (July 25, 1946 – April 11, 2026)

Maureen Anne was born on July 25, 1946, at Choate Memorial Hospital in Woburn, Massachusetts, to Bettie Elaine (Comstock) and John Richard Callahan. When Maureen was eighteen months old, she and her mother moved to Shelby, Michigan, to live with her loving grandparents, Dorn and Genevera Comstock. At the age of five, her mother married Harold Neuman, who adopted Maureen and raised her as his own.

As a child, Maureen was a fan of cowboys like Roy Rogers. Her love for animals, strong work ethic, and sharp intelligence remained defining traits throughout her life. A gifted student, Maureen skipped the second grade and graduated at the top of her class before enrolling in the Hackley Hospital School of Nursing in Muskegon. She graduated in 1966 at the age of nineteen.

Maureen began her nursing career at Sparrow Hospital in Lansing. That summer, her roommate asked for a favor: to join her on a blind double date. It was there that Maureen met Bruce, a teacher for the Bridgeport Spaulding School District. On the following New Year's Eve, while driving to a party in his 1966 blue Corvette, Bruce proposed. They were married in Hart, Michigan, on June 22, 1968.

In 1972, Bruce and Maureen settled into a home in the country between Bridgeport and Frankenmuth, where they grew their family—first with their son, Rory, and later their daughter, Kelly.

Maureen spent her career as an operating room nurse at Saginaw General, St. Luke's Surgicare, and Covenant, where she retired in 2008. She cherished her colleagues and maintained those friendships for decades.

In retirement, Maureen found a new joy in being "Nana" to her granddaughters, Lilly and Isabella. She and Bruce joined St. Lorenz Lutheran Church in 2016 and always looked forward to visiting their "summer church family" at St. Stephen Lutheran in Shelby.

Maureen is survived by her husband of 58 years, Bruce; her children, Rory Caliman and Kelly (Ted) Stevens; and her granddaughters, Lilly and Isabella. She also leaves behind her sisters, Linda Neuman and Nancy (Loyd) Hopper; and her brother, Tom (Wanda) Callahan.

The family has decided to have a private celebration of life.

Those wishing an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Lorenz VBS fund, as Maureen was a VBS volunteer for over 10 years.
