Loving husband, father, grandfather passed away Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Covenant Cooper Medical Center; age 78 years. Robert was born on September 29, 1940 in Saginaw, MI to the late Robert F. Jacobs and June E. Nelson. He was married to Beverly A. Laking on May 14, 1966; she survives him. Robert graduated from Saginaw High, attended Delta College, Alma College, and completed an apprentice program with GM to become a journeyman toolmaker. Robert honorably served in the U.S. Navy. He was retired from General Motors, Saginaw Steering Gear Division as a Skilled Trades Supervisor. After his retirement he did consulting work for various companies. Robert was a member of St. Michael's Lutheran Church in Richville. He was also a Life member of Germania Town and Country Club.
Bob loved football. He played at Saginaw High and Alma College. He also played semi-pro for the Flint Blue Devils and the Lansing All Stars. He was an avid fan of U of M football. He enjoyed talking to people, spending time with family, traveling, his various collections, discussing history, and watching old movies. Above all, he was generous, kind hearted, and a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.
Robert was preceded in death by: his father; Robert F. Jacobs, his mother; June E. (Gardner) Nelson, step-father; William E. Nelson, step-brother; Leonard Nelson, mother and father-in-law; Dorothy I. (Reinbold) and Donald M. Laking, and his nephew; Stephen C. Schnell. Besides his wife of over 52 years Beverly A. (Laking), Robert is survived by: son; Robert G. Jacobs II (The Woodlands, Texas), grandson; Leopold M.B. Jacobs (The Woodlands, Texas), brother; Thomas W. (Constance) Grantham (Freeland), step-brother; Dale Nelson (Burton), several nieces and nephews; Julie Schnell, Nicholas (Christine) Laking, Joseph (Barbara) Laking, Heidi (Tim) Henke, Kirsten (Cletis) Wellnitz, Jessica (Paul) Phillips, Christopher (Sabrina) Kuhl, and Matthew (Melissa) Kuhl.
Funeral services will take place on Friday, November 2, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. at St. Michael's Lutheran Church, 3455 S. Van Buren Road, Richville, Michigan. Rev. Rob Gadeken and Rev. Wesley Gillaspie will officiate. Cremation has taken place. Robert's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Thursday from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Friday at the church from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider memorials to St. Michael's Lutheran Church, Richville Fire Department, or St. Jude Children's Hospital.
