Verna D. VanDevelde

Verna D. VanDevelde went to be with her Lord on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at her home with her loving husband by her side. Verna Herzog was born on October 7, 1941, in Frankenmuth, MI to the late Otto and Clara Herzog. She is survived by her husband, James VanDevelde (Jim); her three sons, Mark (Debbie Williams) VanDevelde of Whitehall, MI, Michael VanDevelde of Alexandria, VA, Craig (Cari Ann) VanDevelde of Hope, MI; ten grandchildren Andrew, Nathan and Dane VanDevelde, Courtney and Kyle Fishback, Kennedy, Kaitlin and Quinton VanDevelde, Conner (Kristen) and Morgan VanDevelde; sister Lynn Ahrens; sister-in-law Teresa Herzog, and many loving nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by sisters, Marian (Herzog) Hecht and Eileen Herzog; brother, Marvin Herzog; and brothers-in-law, John Ahrens Sr and Lloyd Hecht.

Verna was born, raised, and lived out her 80 years in Frankenmuth, MI. She is a graduate of Frankenmuth High School (Class of 1959) and on August 10, 1963, Verna married James VanDevelde. Throughout her life, music was a true passion, playing piano with her family growing up on the Herzog farm, singing in the church choir, and as wife to a band director. Verna dedicated much of her time giving to others and serving her community, working for the Frankenmuth School District lunch services program, as a librarian at Wickson Memorial Library, and holding various roles as an active member on the Frankenmuth City Beautification Committee and Keep Michigan Beautiful Foundation. To many of her friends and family, Verna was revered for her famous green bean casserole and her cherished butterhorns. Above all else, she loved her family.

Verna's funeral Mass will be celebrated on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 958 E. Tuscola Rd., Frankenmuth, Michigan where James and Verna were founding members. Burial will follow at Blessed Trinity Cemetery. Verna's family will receive visitors at Cederberg Funeral Home of Frankenmuth, 590 N. Franklin St. on Tuesday, August 16, 2022, from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and at the church on Wednesday, August 17, 2022, from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
